7 Hammersmith Terrace - Emery Walker's House

7 Hammersmith Terrace - Emery Walker's House

7 Hammersmith Terrace is a tall Georgian house on the River Thames. From 1903 to 1933 it was the home of Sir Emery Walker, printer, collector, and mentor to his neighbour William Morris. Contains perfectly preserved Arts & Crafts interior.

He furnished the house with wallpaper, textiles and furniture from Morris & Co., as well as ceramics and rugs he collected on his travels throughout Europe. The manner of decoration is very much that found in the homes of his friends, the leaders of the Arts & Crafts movement, William Morris and Philip Webb. Thanks to the efforts of Walker's daughter, the furnishing and decoration of the house has survived almost exactly as it was in his lifetime. As such, it is the only interior of its kind in Britain.

Visitors can hear about the stories of Emery and his family and friends, how the house came to be preserved and the importance of the house to the Arts & Crafts movement.

Highlights include:

  • Furniture, textiles and personal possessions belonged to William Morris
  • Furniture, ceramics and metalwork by Cotswolds Arts & Crafts artists
  • Pretty riverside garden
