Description:
This seemingly typical early 19th century Northampton terrace has an unassuming brick façade, yet behind it lies Charles Rennie Mackintosh last ever major commission for wealthy model train manufacturer Bassett-Lowke. The partnership of designer and patron inspired Mackintosh to even greater levels of creativity. Careful restoration means that visitors will now be able to enjoy Mackintosh's unique and striking interiors including the dramatic black walls and jewel-like stencils in the hall lounge and the trellis-effect of the staircase screen.
The adjoining property, number 80, has been transformed from a small Georgian terrace into a modern gallery. It houses an exhibition about the 1917 design of number 78 and about Bassett-Lowke and his business. It includes a display of many fine model ships and trains. The entrance is through number 82, where one can see a short video and a display about how the restoration was undertaken.
Open Tuesday afternoons from 13.00 and every Wednesday - Sunday 10.00 am - 17.00. Last entry 16.30. Closed Mondays, (except Bank Holidays) and Tuesday mornings. Admission Charges are £5.50 adult, £4.00 concessions. Visit the website above for more details.
