Changing of the Guard - Windsor Castle

Landmarks & Historical Sites

Description:

The Changing of the Guard is, strictly speaking, called Guard Mounting where the new guard exchanges duty with the old guard. The Guards are stationed at Victoria Barracks and march up to and from the Castle accompanied by the Guards Band playing traditional military marches as well as popular songs.

The route is from the barracks, up Sheet Street, left into the High Street, past the Parish Church and the Guildhall, then turning right onto Castle Hill by Queen Victoria's Statue and into the Castle. A little while later the old guard return to the barracks with the band following the same route. The Guildhall is a good viewing point being slightly raised, although good views are available throughout the route.

The most interesting part of the Changing of the Guard is their march to and from the Barracks accompanied by the band and this is the aspect that children will enjoy most. The other element takes place in Lower Ward, in the area adjacent to the Guard Room and the entrance to Horseshoe Cloisters where the old and new guard exchange duties. You will need to buy a ticket to enter the castle to see this part of the ceremony.

The Guard Mounting takes place at 11.00 on different days according to the month. To watch the new guard march to the castle you should be in the High Street at around 10.50. To see the guard march back to barracks you should be in the High Street at around 11.25.
