MEET THE TUDORS
24 – 26 May 2008
Meet King Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I as they stroll around the grounds of their Tudor Palace. Henry visited Sudeley with his second wife, Anne Boleyn, in 1535 and Elizabeth I famously partied here for three days in 1592 to celebrate the defeat of the Spanish Armada.
In the main arena The Falconer will be displaying and flying the King’s private collection of owls, hawks and kestrels.
Look out for Gilbert Savage, the Tudor Executioner! Over 70,000 people were executed during Henry VIII’s reign and Gilbert will be demonstrating his gory gallows, block and axe - don’t upset the King or you could be next for the chop!
For budding Archers there's Have-A-Go-Archery throughout the day. Get a chance to hit the target with bows designed for your age and height. See different types of bows being shot – including the longbow and Mongolian longbow – as used by Robin Hood! Demonstrations on the hour, every hour, from 11am to 4pm.
The Jolly Jester will be performing juggling and magic for the amusement of King Henry and his subjects.
On Monday only, the singing group Musyck Anon will be performing madrigals and other 16th and 17th Century songs from 2pm - 4pm.
Sudeley was once home to Queen Katherine Parr, the last and only surviving wife of Henry VIII, who is entombed in St. Mary’s Church within the grounds. Visit this beautiful 15th Century chapel and Katherine’s marble tomb.
Visit Sudeley’s exhibitions and see the fascinating collection of artefacts from throughout Sudeley’s history, including a fine collection of Tudor paintings, miniatures and rare relics of Queen Katherine Parr. The Tudor costume collection in the exhibitions area meticulously recreates the elaborately bejewelled robes of Henry VIII and his six wives - created for David Starkey’s TV series The Six Wives of Henry VIII.

World famous Shakespeare’s Globe comes to Sudeley
-
18/04/2008
A small troupe will perform Shakespeare’s tragic tale of star-crossed lovers in the stunning grounds of Sudeley, with the backdrop of the ruins of the romantic Tithe Barn. The troupe of actors will entertain outdoor crowds with their stripped down version of Shakespeare’s classic love story, true to the old principles of touring theatre.
The production will be re-cast and re-imagined by director Elizabeth Freestone who has recently been director on attachment at the National Theatre Studio. Romeo and Juliet will once again include Anthony Lamble’s innovative campervan design.
Dominic Dromgoole, Artistic Director of Shakespeare’s Globe, says; “The Globe was born out of a touring company culture, and that culture remained vital to it while it flourished. We are delighted to be exploring again the tradition of taking Shakespeare into non-theatrical spaces.”
Tickets are £15 for Adults and £10 for Concessions. Performances at 7pm; Gates open 6pm, bring your own seating and a picnic. Some refreshments will be available.
Box Office: 020 7401 9919 or from Sudeley’s Visitor Centre.

Things you maybe never knew about St. George? Some folks think St George was maybe one of the mythical knights of King Arthur’s Round Table. But no, he was in fact a Roman Army Officer and here are some other facts that maybe you didn’t know about St. George?
1. Although he’s the patron saint of England, St. George was actually born in Israel (and probably never ever visited these shores).
2. St. George is also the patron saint of Canada, Catalonia, Ethiopia, Georgia, Greece, Montenegro, and Serbia, as well as the patron saint of many charities and cities including Moscow.
3. St. George was a worthy solider in the Roman army and earned himself a position of nobility.
4. St. George was born in 270 AD and he died aged just 33.
5. St. George was given his sainthood because he refused to carry out the persecution of the Christians which was demanded of him by his leader in the Roman army, and he was then tortured and killed.
6. St. George’s Day is celebrated in England on the 23 April, which is said to be either the date he died or the date of his martyrdom.
7. The banner of St George is a white flag with a red cross, and as is well know used as the Flag of England. This call was used to encourage bravery before soldiers went into battle.
8. Shakespeare was born and dies on 23 April, St. George's Day.
St. George's Parade at the Cenotaph – 19 AprilA short service and parade will be held at the Cenotaph at Whitehall, including the laying of a wreath and a formal march organised by the Royal Society of St. George. The parade takes place on Saturday 19 April from 10:30.
St. George and Shakespeare – 19 AprilAlthough William Shakespeare's birthday is not known for definite it is traditionally celebrated on 23 April. Coinciding with St. George's Day, the patron Saint of England, there are plenty of activities celebrating English culture on or around Shakespeare’s birthday in London, so you can make a historic weekend of it. The events for Shakespeare’s birthday at the Globe take place on Saturday 19, Sunday 20 and Wednesday 23 April 2008.
Festival for St. George at Covent Garden – 19 AprilThe crowds will be out in force on Saturday 19 April for what promises to be a lively St Georges Day London event. Join in the traditional fun of St. Georges Day at Covent Garden for dancing, live music and plenty of patriotic fun.
If you thought that the only traditional English dance there is, is the one where single men shuffle up and down on the dance-floor at a club looking shiftily at the floor, then think again. The Royal Society of St. George is putting on a show of traditional English dance and music at Covent Garden in celebration of St. Georges Day.
With Morris dancing, a traditional Mummers play from the Moulton Mummers and music from the English Folk Dance and Song society, the celebration of St. Georges Day at Covent Garden is set to be a fantastic day of entertainment.
Covering music from all the ages, there will be military music from the Royal Yeomanry Band and even fifties lindy hop and jive from the Jive Aces. And for the kids there will be a Punch and Judy show on the site too.
Taking place from around 10:45, the celebrations of St. Georges Day at Covent Garden encompass the two minutes silence at 11.00.
St. George's Day at Trafalgar Square – 23 AprilCelebrate St. George's Day at Trafalgar Square with a delicious selection of British cuisines. With the traditional atmosphere of an English fete in the springtime and plenty of live entertainment too, there will be loads of fun to be had and goodies to try.
The theme for the festivities during St George's Day at Tragalgar Square is Food, Glorious Food, taken from the infectious sing a long song of the Oliver Twist musical. A complete food lovers’ delight, the celebrations include a large performance stage with a banquet table, and over sized tableware.
All the street theatre is set to be themed around the subject of food, and the cabaret features culinary motifs too, making the whole day one big feast of St. George's Day entertainment. Traditional English theatre mixes it up with dance and street performance, and there is sure to be something for everyone to celebrate the national day.
For those that want to eat the food rather than see a dance about it, never fear, there will be food and all things delicious as far as the eye can see. The world famous Borough Market is setting up stall in Trafalgar Square for the day and inviting visitors to sample its well renowned wares. With all manner of culinary delights, you
