The Old Operating Theatre

Description:

The attic of a 300 year old church houses Britain’s only surviving 19th century Operating Theatre, and an Apothecary’s Herb Garret. Museum displays of brutal surgical instruments combine with hands-on herb grinding and pill-making for an entertaining experience for all.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: The Museum will be closed from Monday 19th May until c. Wednesday 4th June for restoration. Please keep an eye on the website for confirmation of exact re-opening date. The Operating Theatre itself will not be accessible until late June, but the Museum collection and Herb Garret, including special new displays, will be available at a reduced admission charge.

Accessibility

Due to the nature of the building, the only access to the Museum is via a narrow, 32-step spiral staircase. Therefore, there is no wheelchair access or access for those with limited mobility. We do, however, provide braille guides to the museum, and can organise handling activities for blind people. We also have a hearing loop in the theatre.
