The Stonehenge Tour
Go back in time to discover the World Heritage Site of Stonehenge - probably the most sophisticated stone circle in the world. The giant stones have been here on Salisbury Plain for over 4000 years - magnificent, magical and mysterious. There are many stories about the significance of Stonehenge and you can learn about some them on the audio tour at the site. Stonehenge continues to draw people from all over the world who stand in awe at this feat of ancient engineering and soak up the atmosphere.
The tour also takes you past the huge earthworks of Old Sarum, an Iron Age hill fort, later inhabited by Romans, Saxons and most importantly, Normans. They built a castle and a royal palace, and by the mid-12th century it was a busy town with a fine cathedral. Lack of water and squabbles between church and military led to the building of a new settlement by the river now known as Salisbury. Hop off to investigate and join a later tour.
A combined ticket that gives you admission to Stonehenge as well as the tour is available from South West Trains. Services to Salisbury run from London Waterloo every 30 minutes Monday to Saturday. Approximate journey time from London Waterloo is around 1 and a half hours.
Location
You can join the tour at Salisbury rail station or at the bus station in Endless Street. You can also get on at the top of Castle Street, next to Butts Road. Raise your arm when you see the bus approaching. The bus timetable is different at different times of the year, so please check your journey time carefully before you set off. Please call 01722 336855 for departure times or visit the Stonehenge Tour.
