Originally built in 1106 by order of Henry I, few buildings evoke such an immediate feeling of history. Once home of the Earls of Devon and a Plantagenet princess, and later besieged and taken by Fairfax in 1645. Great fun for children. Try on Civil War armour; interesting furniture and pictures; ghost stories, secret passages, beautiful gardens. Stay in comfortable holiday apartments. Open Sundays, Thursdays, Bank Holiday Mondays 2.30 – 5.30pm, last admission 5pm. Adults £6, Children 7 – 16 years £2.50, Under 7s free.
