The HellFire Caves
In the 1750s, Francis Dashwood, a former Chancellor of the Exchequer, had a series of caves excavated that were inspired by his visits to the Ottoman Empire. Long winding passages lead deep underground for more than half a mile. There’s a Banqueting Hall, various chambers, statues, an Inner Temple and even a subterranean river called the River Styx. It all makes for a quirky and fun day out 300 feet beneath West Wycombe Hill. Trains from London to High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire take about 30 minutes. See The HellFire Caves website for directions.
From Paddington station, it’s just half an hour on the train to Legoland Windsor so if you set off early you can get a full day here. And boy will you need it. There’s 55 attractions and rides for children aged two to 12 from water parks to pirate camps to a Duplo-themed play area for toddlers.
If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous - and decadent - take the two-hour train from London to Bournville in Birmingham for a fun-packed day at Cadbury World. With chocolate rain, Crunchie rollercoasters, liquid Dairy Milk and a Creme Egg airship, this is real Willy Wonka-type stuff. Oompa Loompas not included.
