London is on the up. There are new towers and skyscrapers popping up all over the place and the skyline is getting more weird and wonderful by the day. To see the city in all its glory you’d best get high up.
The Coca-Cola London Eye
At 135 metres tall, The Coca-Cola London Eye is the world’s highest observation wheel. During your 30-minute rotation, at 0.6mph, you’ll see unparalleled views of London including its landmarks and the bends in the River Thames. On a clear day you can see up to 40km (25 miles) in all directions.
Arcelor Mittal Orbital
At 114.5m tall, Arcelor Mittal Orbital is the UK’s tallest sculpture. From the viewing galleries you will see miles of London skyline and landmarks including Canary Wharf, The Gherkin, The Shard, St Paul’s Cathedral, Alexandra Palace and Wembley Stadium. Screens will give you more information. After taking in the views, visitors are encouraged to walk down the 455 steps which spiral around the central column.
Sir Christopher Wren’s monument, commemorating the Great Fire of London in 1666, is the tallest isolated stone column in the world. It was built in 1677 and in recent years has undergone a £4.5million renovation. Climb the 311 spiral steps to The Monument's observation gallery 160ft (48.7m) up and you will be rewarded with panoramic views of the capital.
St Paul’s Cathedral
At 111m high, St Paul’s has the second largest cathedral dome in the world and you can climb the 500 steps up inside it should you so wish. If you do, you’ll get to the Golden Gallery and see amazing expansive views of London.
The Tower Bridge Exhibition now includes a high-level glass walkway that allows you to see the traffic roar 40 metres beneath your feet. True, this is by no means the tallest attraction in town but where else will you get the chance to see one of the world’s most iconic bridges open up beneath your feet and boats sail below you. Just check the website for the bridge’s lift times - or even download the Tower Bridge app - so you time it right.
